In the Suez crisis Britain and France had funded the building of the canal and had not recovered its outlay when Egypt seized it.
In the present situation the USA has no leverage on the UK. We owe nothing to them. We have supported the USA and been betrayed at every turn. The UK is totally sovereign thanks to us leaving the EU.
Britain had been bombed to hell during the war as was in the process of rebuilding.

This notwithstanding the British was already disassembling the Empire. Eisenhower bought the USA all the conflict in the Middle East from then to now.
